Whenever purchasing goods from overseas, it’s always important to consider how you will get them delivered to you.
There are multiple options available and how you send it, will ultimately depend on the size of your cargo and how soon you need or want it.
For small goods (usually less than 20kgs) it is generally more cost effective to send through a postal network or international courier. Keep in mind that any goods valued over AUD1000.00 will still need to be cleared through Customs, with possible import duty & GST applicable. This would need to be paid prior to your cargo being delivered out to you.
For larger cargo, it will generally come down to how quick you need your goods and the cost to freight them. Obviously, the larger the cargo, the higher the freight will be, especially for air freight. So, then the key question becomes…do I need the goods in 5 days or 1-2 months (depending on where the goods are coming from)?
So, whether you choose postal, international courier, air freight or any type of sea freight, it’s always best to engage a freight forwarder. Forwarders have a better knowledge of how best to bring in your cargo, can provide you with a cost prior to arranging, generally have a good agency network worldwide & more often than not, can also assist with the brokering formalities to clear your goods through Customs and Quarantine.
